Summer Classes: Programme

Each week there will be a topic provided and examples to look at developing themes from week to week. Those who want to can work independently. Whether we are starting from scratch drawing after a life time the same fundamental questions need to be considered when starting a drawing.

These issues will be covered over this introductory series of summer classes. Drawing will make up the major part of the evening different poses and selection of images that explore the issue of the week. There will be a brief review. 9.00-9.15 pm will be for clearing up our things.

July 5th
Figure
-Decision time: choosing your starting point. What do I want to express about the figure in front of me? What do I want people to look at?
-Placing and impact: where to place the focus of attention within the picture.

July 12th
Figure
-Medium and Effects: Choosing the medium to create the effect you want to create; exploring the possibilities and limitations of a range of drawing media.

July 19th
Figure
-Style and approach: cautious and measured, abandoned and risky?

July 26th
Portait: head and shoulders
-Less is more. when is my drawing finished? What basic elements of drawing (placing line, tone, texture, colour) do I need to use to get the effect I’m after?

August 9th
Figure
-Sometimes we need to take careful decisions other times we just need to go with the flow. There are no rules

Something to think about before the first class.

Look at the artists’ drawings you like. How have they focused our attention? What means have they used to achieve this?

I am interested in helping members of the class to identify the focus of interest for them in their drawing. We will notice what takes place as we draw: how a muddle and a sense of incompetence can often be the prelude to a real development in our art.
