4)Copying: explorations and improvisations
2-4.00pm Fridays Spring term 2008 (limited spaces)
For those students interested in exploring images they love by making copies
of them.
“We are at out most original when copying the work of others”
Pablo Picasso.
Why did some of the most radical artists spend so much time copying the work
of others: Degas copied Mategna; Cezanne, Poussin and Picasso copied Velazquez
amongst many others.
Classes will be working in the studio from reproductions and on location in the Fitzwillliam Museum.
Each session will be a mixture of practice and discussion
about the aims and methods of copying. There will be references to the history
and variety of copying over the centuries: academy, impressionists, modernists,
postmodernists and conceptual artists.
Wqe look at how modernist concerns with originality and spontaneity sidelined
this activity from art school syllabuses in the 20th century.
